Council on Student Experience
.... seeking input!
STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION WORKING GROUP
Following the release of the report, In Their Own Words: Understanding the undergraduate student experience at the University of Toronto, The Council of Student Experience has been working to act on some of the issues our students identified as having an impact on their learning experiences. One of the working groups of the Council is focused on investigating ways in which students and faculty engage with one another during and outside of class. The goal of the working group is to identify and share effective practices across the University in order to enhance the overall experience of our students. A report will be produced based on the working group's recommendations.
The working group is seeking to:
(a) Identify ways in which faculty members effectively foster student-faculty engagement.
(b) Share best-practices with regard to student-faculty interaction across departments.
(c) Investigate the feasibility of offering students small group Q & A sessions with faculty in addition to, or in place of, office hours.
(d) Identify ways to enhance the use of online tools for out of class discussion.
(e) Identify opportunities in all academic disciplines for semi-structured social interaction between students and faculty members.
(f) Identify key messages to be communicated to students, staff and faculty regarding the value of student-faculty interaction.
The working group is seeking input from University of Toronto instructors on effective examples of student-faculty interaction in and outside the classroom per the specific mandate areas listed above. If you would like to share any experiences concerning this topic, or any suggestions about effective practices, please send an email with the subject heading, Council on Student Experience: Student-Faculty Interaction to ctsi.teaching@utoronto.ca.
With thanks for your contributions!
