Paid Training

Any University of Toronto student (graduate or undergraduate)or post-doc in any of the teaching units who is a member of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 is eligible for paid training prior to their first teaching appointment. Course Instructors are eligible for 6 hours of paid training. TAs are eligible for 3 hours, and up to an additional 3 hours of paid training for each subsequent appointment of 70 hours or more.

Please Note:
  • It is the department in which you have been hired, and not the TATP or CUPE 3902, that will pay you for the additional training.
  • It is also the department in which you are hired that decides whether or not a TATP workshop or event qualifies as paid training.

Payment for additional training must be arranged with the designated authority in the hiring department and pre-approved by the designated authority BEFORE the training takes place. Workshops offered as part of the TATP workshop series can be considered additional training only if the hiring department approves in advance and only if the TATP sessions are pertinent for the TA's current appointment. TAs wishing to count TATP workshops as additional training need to clear this with their departments before attending the TATP workshops. There is a form on the CUPE 3902 training page that can be printed off and brought to the TATP session. This form must have already been signed by a Course Coordinator or other designated authority in the hiring department prior to the workshop. Once the session is completed, a TATP staff member who can confirm the TA's attendance at the session will also sign the form. To be paid for the session, the TA must present the form with both signatures to the business officer in the TA's hiring department. TAs may need to leave the form with TATP staff and return to pick it up later.

If you plan to use this session to fulfill your mandatory 3-hour training for first-contract TAs, please read the following:

1) You must have the hiring department’s approval to use the session as your mandatory training. You must obtain this permission BEFORE attending the session.

2) In order to be paid, you must download a form from the CUPE 3902 website (a link is also included in this email message). Fill out this form and have it signed by your department BEFORE you attend this session.

3) In most cases, the Course Coordinator or the TA Coordinator in the hiring department has the authority to sign this form.

4) Bring the signed form to the session for a TATP staff member to sign as confirmation of your attendance. Please note: a TATP staff member will ONLY sign a complete form.
